TV

Here’s a list of some TV appearances I know about but unfortunately I don't have the exact dates that these shows were aired nor are they all available on Youtube.

20th Century Box (Revolution in Rock) (19th July 1981)
Part 1 - Live footage of new band The Belle Stars, an all girl band from London mixing styles  of reggae and rock.
Part 2 - The Belle Stars are interviewed and play live.

20th Century Box (Rise of the Independence) (26th July 1981)
Stiff Records owner Dave Robinson is shown in his office, on the phone organising a tour, stood discussing ideas with Jennie Matthias of The Belle Stars, signed to his label.

20th Century Box (Rick in Revolution) Series
Possibly the same performances as mentioned above but descriptions slightly differ:
1) British Rock/Reggae group The Belle Stars performing in the studio
2) Members of The Belle Stars standing in studio, Belle Stars singer interviewed, Belle Stars performing.

Late Night from Two (3rd June 1982)
Programme on sexism, features The Belle Stars singing ‘Iko Iko’.

Iko Iko - David Essex's Showcase (1982).
This was a variety show in which The Belle Stars performed Iko Iko live.

The Clapping Song (1982) - Top of the Pops
The Belle Stars appeared on Top of the Pops three times and a Xmas special.

The Clapping Song (1983) - Rock & Pop Awards
They appeared at the end of the show and played an extended version of the song.

The Clapping Song (1982) - Musikladen - German TV

Mockingbird
I never saw the band play this on TV at all. From the press around at the time it appeared they weren't totally behind the song.

Sign of The Times (1983) - Top of the Pops
The Bellies biggest hit. They appeared three times and a Xmas special.  Apparently Stella performed one of the rehearsals in a nun's habit but the producer wouldn't let her wear it on the actual show.

Sign of The Times (20th January 1983) - Gloria Hunniford's Sunday Sunday
The Bellies performed this live.

Sign of The Times (1983) - live on French TV - the Champs Elysees
Jennie mucks up her lines at the beginning of the song.

A-Plus - Documentary (1982/3)
A half hour documentary about The Belle Stars. Includes rare live footage (not enough!) and an excellent live performance of The Snake.

Sweet Memory - Top of the Pops (1983)
Miranda chokes on her sax

Sweet Memory - Razzmatazz (1983)

Sweet Memory - Saturday Superstore (1983)
Mike Reid also interviewed the band and there was a Belle Stars competition.

Sweet Memory (live) / Blame (live) and Baby I'm Yours (live) (1983) - GET SET
Excellent live performances of all three songs.

Sweet Memory / Sign of the Times (1983) - Oxford Roadshow
This appearance was on the very last show. Jennie mentioned they had been on the first (or an early) show but I don’t have any other details.

Indian Summer (live) / The Entertainer (live) (1983) - No.73
Great live performances. This was the first UK performance of The Entertainer which was released much later in the year.

The Entertainer (1983) Musikladen - German TV
Slightly shorter version of the song.

The Entertainer (1983) - Razzmatazz

The Entertainer (1983) - The Russell Harty Show

The Entertainer (11th October 1983) - Hold Tight
Different version of the song.

The Tube - live (11th February1983)
The video for Sign of the Times was apparently played and the band performed live in the Studio: Burning, Slick Trick, Indian Summer and Sign of the Times.  Indian Summer appears on a compilation DVD released in 2005/6.

4-Trax Live - (1983/4) - live concert on Channel 4
The Belle Stars opened the show with one reviewer saying they were the best band on and that the rest of the show was rubbish. Very true! They played Sweet Memory, Sign of the Times, Crime of Passion, The Entertainer, Indian Summer, The Reason and Ci Ya Ya (I think).

80's Romance (1984)
I don't think The Belle Stars performed this on TV.  I think that it was a very early sign of the 7-peice splitting up because only Lesley, Miranda and Sarah-Jane appeared on a Saturday morning TV show where an edited version of the video was played.

The video was also shown on No.73 and apparently they performed the song too.  (Thanks to Alan for the info 25/11/2008). If anyone has a copy of the performance then please let me know!

The video was also played on TVAM in 1984.

World Domination (1986)
I never saw any TV appearances myself in the UK, not even the video. I remember watching Max Headroom once and they only showed the first 3 seconds of the video - I was well annoyed at the time!  I do know Miranda, SJ and Lesley performed abroad in Europe.  News just in (03/06/2008), apparently World Domination was shown on TV twice, once on the The Chart Show, Channel 4, and once on a Saturday Morning kids show where a guest celebrity comments on the video.  Unfortunately, the guest that week was Gary Glitter. More news (14/09/2008): Trawling through my memorabilia, the BSBandits newsletter in 1986 said that World Domination appeared on the Chart Show and Breakfast Time TV.  Get Fresh showed the video and interviewed Miranda. Saturday Picture Show featured the video and the band.  The band appeared live on Night Line. In France, World Domination appeared popular and the band were interviewed for 7 major stations.

Too Drunk to Remember (mid 80s)
Short film, contemporary comedy, directed by Sebastian Harris, written by Maggie Brooks. Cast included Carlene Carter and Bob Kingston (Tenpole Tudor).  Apparently Jennie Bellestar also appears in it. I’ve not seen it though.

CBTV
Jennie and Miranda on an ITV childrens show called CBTV where they take Anneka Rice out shopping for clothes for a Belle Stars look. (Thanks to Alan for the info 25/11/2008).

Unknown
A talk show from 1982, where Jennie (?) was a guest and was interviewed by Julie Stevens, it was kind of like Loose Women.  (Thanks to Alan for the info 25/11/2008).

TVAM (1983)
Belle Stars Pop feature

Never Mind the Buzzcocks (Series 1, Episode 7 - first aired 24/01/1996)
Stella and Clare appear on the identity parade.
